What is
Agentic Enterprise
An agentic enterprise is an organization where agents do governed work across functions on a shared platform. Platform engineering is its operating model: one agent infrastructure of harness, governance and models, with the tooling and paths swapped per function.
Why platform engineering is the operating model of the agentic enterprise
Everyone now has access to the same models; what organizations build around them is the only thing left to compete on. When anyone in the business can generate an application or run an agent, the platform becomes the most important control plane in the company. Engineering goes first because its work is text-based, its value stream is well defined and its output can be validated, but the same agent infrastructure is what marketing, sales, finance and clinical teams need next.
One substrate, many functions
The agent infrastructure built for agentic development is the same infrastructure agentic marketing or finance needs. What changes per function is the tooling and the paths, not the foundation.
Platform as the operating system of the enterprise
The platform team stops being a supporting IT function and becomes the operating layer the whole enterprise depends on: identity, policy, context and governance for every agent.
A journey, not a launch
No organization becomes agentic after one good quarter. Maturity moves level by level, and the platform, not the model, sets how fast an organization can climb.
38%
State of AI in Platform Engineering, Volume 2 (Weave Intelligence, 2026), n=350
41% of organizations sit at Level 1 of agentic development, 31% at Level 2, 14% at Level 3 and 4% at Level 4. Maturity pays: 79% of Level 4 organizations have doubled throughput, against 30% at Level 1, and more than 20% at Level 3 or 4 report transformative ROI, against 2% at Level 1. Twelve months ago, more than 95% sat at Level 1 or below.

“Not that platform engineering will expand because it has expanded before, but that the discipline was never specific to software in the first place.”

Trends in the agentic enterprise to watch in 2026
The climb to Level 3
We expect more than 30% of organizations to report Level 3 or above by next year, up from 18% today, as agents move from assistants to orchestrated workers.
Platform engineering beyond software
The same agent infrastructure is being reused for marketing, sales, finance and clinical platforms, and the platform engineer becomes the marketing or legal platform engineer.
Value over output
Throughput is up, ROI lags. Organizations move from counting agents shipped to measuring cost per accepted output and outcomes the business recognizes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the agentic enterprise and an Agentic Engineering Platform (AEP)?
The AEP is the development instance of the agentic enterprise stack: it evolved from the IDP and makes platform paths executable by agents at scale. The agentic enterprise applies the same agent infrastructure to every function, with tooling and paths swapped per vertical.
Why does engineering become agentic first?
Engineering work is text-based, its value stream is well defined, its output can be validated objectively, and the unit of work is legible and reversible. That makes it the proving ground for agent infrastructure the rest of the enterprise later reuses.
Why do large enterprises lag on agentic maturity?
Thirteen of the fourteen organizations reporting Level 4 have fewer than 100 engineers. Large enterprises face legacy estates, competing standards and change-management problems that no architecture can remove on its own, which is why the operating model matters as much as the tooling.
